Island Air Service has dedicated the past 40 years to flying passengers and freight to Kodiak's six coastal communities and the various canneries and remote water destinations around Kodiak Island. In 2016, legendary bush pilot Bob Stanford, owner and operator of Island Air Service, began a new chapter when he turned the company over to three new owners. Pilots Taj Shoemaker and Erik Howard and Maintenance Director Adam Lutz all long time employees of Island Air Service, formed the new leadership and management team to carry on the traditions of Island Air Service.
Taj Shoemaker was born in Alaska and lived most of his life in the Alaskan bush at this family’s hunting and fishing lodge on the Alaska Peninsula. Taj who is a licensed hunting and fishing guide learned to fly at an early age and now acts as Chief Pilot. Erik Howard, Director of Operations, is originally from Washington State and has been flying with Island Air Service since 2009. He obtained his pilots certificate in 2004 and went on to add his commercial, multi-engine and instructor ratings. Adam Lutz spent 11 years in the Coast Guard as an aircraft mechanic working on helicopters both at Coast Guard Air Stations and aboard Coast Guard cutters. He brings a wealth of aircraft maintenance management and business experience to the team. Adam serves as Director of Maintenance and company CEO.
